Currently the population of Lucknow is more than 3 million.The majority of Lucknow's population includes people from Eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, Bengalis, South Indians and Anglo-Indians have also settled in Lucknow. Hindus comprise about 77% and Muslims about 20%. There are also small groups of Sikhs, Jains, Christians and Buddhists. As per 2001 census literacy rate of Lucknow is 69.39% (61.22% for females and 76.63% for males).
Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh is situated 123 Mts. above sea level. It is situated on 26.30 & 27.10 North latitude and 80.30 & 81.13 East longitude. Lucknow covers an area of 2528 sq.km. It is surrounded on the eastern side by District Barabanki, on the western side by district Unnao, on the southern side by Raebareli and on the northern side by Sitapur and Hardoi districts. River Gomti flows through the city. Some of the tributries of this river are Kukrail, Loni,Beta etc. Sai river flows from the south of the city and in the east enters district Raebareli. Lucknow is accessible from every part of Indiathrough Air,Rail and Road. It is directly connected with New Delhi, Patna, Calcutta, Mumbai, Varanasi and other major cities by Amausi airport. Similarly city is linked to north, east, south and west through rail and road links. Infact rail link joins Lucknow to Pakistan via Amritsar in the west and to Bangladesh railways in the east. The population of district Lucknow as per census 1991 is 27,62,801 lacs.
